How to Change Your Vehicle's Air Filter
Changing your vehicle's air filter is one of the simplest yet most impactful maintenance tasks you can perform. A clean air filter improves engine performance, fuel efficiency, and helps protect your engine from harmful debris.
Why Air Filters Matter
Your engine needs a precise mix of air and fuel to run properly. The air filter ensures that the air entering your engine is clean and free of dirt, dust, pollen, and debris. Over time, the filter becomes clogged, restricting airflow and forcing your engine to work harder.
Signs Your Air Filter Needs Replacing - Decreased fuel efficiency - Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration - Unusual engine sounds - Black smoke from the exhaust - Check engine light illuminated - Visibly dirty or clogged filter
How Often to Change It
Most manufacturers recommend changing your air filter every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, but this varies based on driving conditions. If you frequently drive on dirt roads, in heavy traffic, or in dusty environments, you may need to change it more often.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Locate the Air Filter Housing Open your hood and find the air filter housing. It's typically a black plastic box near the top of the engine with metal clips or screws holding it closed.
Step 2: Remove the Old Filter Unclip or unscrew the housing cover and carefully remove the old air filter. Take note of how it sits in the housing so you can install the new one correctly.
Step 3: Clean the Housing Before installing the new filter, wipe out any dirt or debris inside the housing with a clean cloth. This prevents contaminants from reaching your engine.
Step 4: Install the New Filter Place the new air filter in the housing, making sure it's seated properly and facing the correct direction. Most filters have an arrow indicating airflow direction.
Step 5: Close the Housing Secure the housing cover with the clips or screws. Make sure it's sealed properly to prevent unfiltered air from entering.
When to Call a Professional
While changing an air filter is straightforward, some vehicles have more complex intake systems. If you're unsure or your vehicle has a performance intake system, it's best to have a professional handle it. At Underground Performance & Diesel Repair, we include air filter inspection with every service visit.
